When Will Coaching Become Regulated in the USA and Other Major Countries?
Coaching is the second fastest-growing industry in the world - yet anyone, anywhere, can call themselves a coach with zero training, zero accountability, and zero consequence. That is about to change.
The Current Reality: A Profession Without Borders or Boundaries
In 2026, professional coaching remains almost entirely unregulated across the United States, the United Kingdom, Europe, Australia, and most of the world. Unlike medicine, law, psychology, or financial advising - all of which require verified qualifications, licensed practice, and accountability to a regulatory body - coaching has no such universal framework.
The result is a marketplace of extraordinary contrast. At one end, rigorously trained, ICF-credentialled coaches delivering life-changing, evidence-based work with clients at the highest professional standard. At the other, individuals with weekend certificates and no formal training offering coaching services to vulnerable people navigating some of the most challenging moments of their lives.
This is not sustainable. And the global coaching community knows it.
What is Currently Happening in the USA
In the United States, coaching regulation does not yet exist at a federal or state level. There is no licensing requirement, no mandatory minimum training standard, and no government body overseeing practice. The coaching profession is currently self-regulated - with organisations like the International Coaching Federation (ICF), the Association for Coaching (AC), and the National Board for Health and Wellness Coaching (NBHWC) setting voluntary standards that credentialled coaches choose to meet.
The NBHWC represents one of the most significant steps toward formalised standards in the US - its board-certified Health and Wellness Coach credential is increasingly recognised by healthcare institutions and employers as a meaningful mark of professional competency. This healthcare-adjacent credentialing pathway may prove to be the model through which formal US regulation eventually emerges.
What is Happening in the UK and Europe
The coaching industry in the UK currently operates without a universally recognised regulatory body that mandates standardised requirements for education, certification or practice. However, momentum is building significantly.
In Europe, as of 2022, eight professional coaching organisations co-signed what is called the Professional Charter for Coaching, Mentoring and Supervision - a landmark self-regulation initiative whose scope reaches beyond Europe and reflects the mission of these professional bodies to establish shared standards of ethics and professional conduct. The signatories include the ICF, the AC, and six other leading bodies - representing a historic step toward unified global standards.
Regulation could serve to elevate the credibility of the coaching profession, introduce safeguards such as a code of ethics, mechanisms for handling complaints, and requirements for ongoing professional development.
When Will Full Regulation Arrive?
The honest answer is that formal government regulation of coaching - in the USA and most major countries - is still likely a way away. But one law change at any time could change everything. The pathway will most probably follow the pattern of other emerging professions: voluntary self-regulation first, then industry-led standards, then formal recognition, and finally legislative protection.
The most realistic near-term scenario is a tiered credentialing system - where coaching adjacent to healthcare, education, or corporate settings becomes regulated first, with broader life and personal coaching following behind.
